NPTEL is the initial of National program on technology enhanced learning. Nptel courses is an initiative by Ministry of Human Resource development along with all the old prestigious IITs and IISc Bangalore since 2003. It is based on massive open online courses platform in which a large number of audience can be benefited at same time. Nptel lectures can be accessed through their Swayam portal or their official website. We will discuss below, “how to register for Nptel courses”?
How are NPTEL courses?
Why NPTEL courses? The first reason for that is the question that, “are you satisfied with you own college academics standard?” If not, then these courses will make you feel like you’re learning with some of the most experienced professors of IITs.
Obviously, many of us suffer from the poor teaching quality of our institutes. Obviously, there are many things apart from studies that these institutes lack but at-least we can counter one of these.
The content of these nptel courses is prepared and taught by some highly experienced professors and HOD of IITs and IISc which is remarkable.
NPTEL Courses Registration
How to register for Nptel courses?
So, Nptel online courses are managed by IIT Madras. It opens the nptel registration portal two times a year. One during Jan-April tenure and another August-November. You can register for these courses a month before the online course get started.
To register, Either you can download the swayam app for mobile or login to swayam official website through web. Create your account through E-mail and select any of the courses from catalog section. Enroll yourself in the course and you’re good to go.
There are a number of courses in various domains which you can take according to your needs and convenience. On the basis of duration of the courses, it is categorized into 3 parts basically:
Online Proctored Exam
So, When you get yourself enrolled in one of the nptel courses, then each week you’ll be assigned an assignment. It will basically cover multiple choice questions from the lectures taught in that particular week. These assignments will be called unproctored assignments.
If you have taken any course that involves programming and all then apart from regular assignments which we have discussed above, they will also assign programming assignments each week which you have to code and submit accordingly.
Now, coming to the proctored i.e. monitored exam it will happen after the completion of the course. Although the online lectures are free but this exam will cost you INR 1000 if you wanna get the certificate approved by AICTE. NTA will conduct these exams at proper exam centres.
What will be the weightage of this exam if you’re giving this? So, it will contain 75% of the total score in the certificate that will be shared with you. Rest 25% will be of weekly assignments. There can be a little bit difference but for most of the course, it is the same.
NPTEL is also providing internships to the toppers of their respective course. To be more specific, top 1% of the toppers of the proctored exam will get opportunity to intern with their respective instructors of the course.

Here are some tips:-
Since the courses are scheduled to be done on a weekly basis, don’t try to mug up all the lectures in one day. Also, keep an eye on your college schedule and planning and then accordingly select what to do and when to do.
I have completed 4 courses till now (i.e. summer of 2020). These are-
- Problem solving through programming in C
- Computer organisation and architecture
- Modern Algebra
- Discrete mathematics
From my experience, I can tell you that here consistency is more helpful than hard-work. They want you to be consistent. Although if you’re not familiar with this online courses platform, then it will take some time to get the flow but once you gear up, it will be fun.
